We all go through difficult times and, for many, we have our favorite songs that bring us comfort or simply let us connect with and process those feelings.
There's a few Peter Gabriel songs I could put in this list but his heart wrenching 'I Grieve', combined with the change in the energy at about the 5:00 mark to change my focus to how I can "carry on", has been useful in the past.
I just know if I play it too many times, it's time to talk to someone.
Sara Bareilles, 'Satellite Call' - "This one's for the lonely child, Brokenhearted, running wild, This was written for the one to blame, One who believe they are the cause of chaos and everything...This is so you'll know the sound, Of someone who loves you from the ground"
Here are some songs that rank on my (CJ's) list for those times. You'll notice my style always has at least some thread of hope.
'Arlington' by The Wailin' Jennys is a classic. Soothing voices linked with a rare mix of somber hope. For times when hope is not yet seen but we know it exists out there.
So I'm not a Taylor Swift fan but 'Safe and Sound' was introduced to me specifically as a song for difficult times. Its lullaby of "The sun is going down, You'll be alright, No one can hurt you now, Come morning light, You and I'll be safe and sound" resonates at the end of a hard day.
If you're looking for an anthem to keep going, how about U2's 'Walk on'? If you don't know this song it's worth checking out the lyrics.
